Agent Orchestration

Agent orchestration is the coordination layer that decides which agent or tool runs when, in what order, with what inputs, and where human approval is required.

It covers sequencing, dependency handling, retries, escalation paths and permissions. Orchestration is what turns individual agents into dependable workflows: without it, you have isolated demos rather than production processes.

A practical example

Example: an orchestration layer runs a lead-routing workflow nightly: it triggers an enrichment agent, waits for completion, routes records the agent flagged as low-confidence to a human queue, and only then updates CRM assignment rules.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how orchestration is defined: visual workflow builder, code, or declarative configuration, and who on your team can edit it.
  • Verify human-in-the-loop support: can you insert approval gates at arbitrary steps, with timeouts and fallback owners?
  • Check error handling: retries with backoff, dead-letter queues for failed runs, and alerting when a workflow stalls.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Orchestration capability is often demonstrated on simple linear flows; complex branching, conditional logic and long-running state are where implementations typically struggle.
