Autonomous Workflows

Autonomous workflows are complete processes that run from trigger to finish without a person stepping in.

The question is not whether one agent decision is smart, but whether an entire sequence — intake, qualification, enrichment, routing, follow-up — can execute unattended with acceptable risk.

A practical example

Example: a webinar registration triggers enrichment, scoring, a personalized follow-up email, and CRM assignment with no reviewer, while deal-stage outreach still requires approval.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors to map every step of the workflow and identify which steps run unattended versus pause for human approval.
  • Test failure behavior: what happens when an API call fails or data is missing mid-run — does the process halt, retry, or continue with bad data?
  • Request an audit log showing who can change workflow logic and how past runs are reviewed after the fact.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: full autonomy removes a human checkpoint, so errors propagate faster and are noticed later. Most teams should automate only low-risk, high-volume processes end to end.
