Conversational AI

Conversational AI is the underlying technology that lets software understand free-form language and hold a dialogue, rather than follow a fixed script.

It combines natural language processing to interpret what a person means, dialogue management to keep track of the exchange, and generation to produce replies.

The capability matters when visitors phrase the same need a hundred different ways.

A practical example

Example: a visitor types 'we're evaluating tools for our outbound team' and the system recognizes an evaluation-stage inquiry, asks about team size, and adjusts its next question accordingly.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Test intent handling with paraphrases and typos: does the system recognize the same request written five different ways?
  • Ask how much conversation history the system retains across sessions, and whether context survives a page change or channel switch.
  • Probe escalation limits: which situations trigger a human handoff, and can you define new escalation rules yourself?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: stronger language understanding usually means less predictable wording and higher compute cost. Vendors rarely publish accuracy figures for your domain, so test with your own real inquiries before committing.
