Knowledge Base

A knowledge base is the structured collection of content an AI agent draws on: help articles, product documentation, policies, FAQs, and internal guides.

In agent platforms it functions as a connected data source with its own requirements: freshness, ownership, structure, and access permissions, rather than a static document folder.

A practical example

Example: before connecting an agent, a team consolidates three overlapping FAQ sets into one owned knowledge base, tags articles by product line, and sets a quarterly review owner for each section.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which content types and formats the platform ingests, and how updates propagate: real-time sync or scheduled re-indexing.
  • Check permission handling: can the agent respect access levels so internal-only content never reaches customers?
  • Review content health tooling: does the vendor flag stale, contradictory, or orphaned articles?

Limitations and tradeoffs

A knowledge base is a maintenance commitment, not a one-time upload; without owners and review cycles, agent answers degrade as content ages.
