Model Context Protocol (MCP)

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open specification, introduced by Anthropic in 2024, that standardizes how AI applications connect to external tools, data sources, and prompts.

It defines a client-server structure: an MCP server exposes capabilities such as querying a CRM or reading files, and any compatible client can discover and use them.

The goal is to reduce bespoke integrations between agents and systems.

A practical example

Example: instead of building a custom connector for your CRM, you run an MCP server that exposes customer lookup and deal-update functions, and your agent platform connects to it once and reuses those tools across workflows.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm which MCP features the vendor supports, such as tools, resources, and prompts, since support levels vary between platforms.
  • Ask how authentication and permissions are enforced per user, because an MCP server can otherwise become an over-privileged data gateway.
  • Check whether the vendor's implementation tracks the evolving specification, as MCP is young and breaking changes have occurred.

Limitations and tradeoffs

MCP standardizes the connection layer, not the quality of what a tool does; a well-integrated but poorly designed MCP server still exposes unreliable actions to your agents.
