Structured Output

Structured output is the enforcement of a defined schema on a model's response, so results arrive as predictable fields rather than free text.

The platform constrains the model to produce, for example, valid JSON matching named fields and types.

This is output format enforcement; it is distinct from validation logic that checks data afterward and from prompt phrasing that merely asks for a format.

For marketing automation, structured output decides whether agent results can sync cleanly into CRM fields or need fragile parsing and cleanup.

A practical example

Label: example. An agent scoring inbound leads must return {lead_id, score, reason, recommended_action}; with structured output enforced, each response maps directly into CRM fields without a parsing step.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether schemas are declared once and enforced by the platform, or whether compliance depends on prompting.
  • Test with nested fields, enums, and long text values to see if the schema holds under realistic data.
  • Check how the platform handles a response that violates the schema: retry, flag, or pass broken data downstream?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Strict schemas can reject useful but imperfect responses, and rigid formats may need redesign as your data model evolves; expect schema maintenance.
