Tool Permissioning

Tool permissioning is the access control layer that defines which tools and actions each agent is allowed to use. It answers questions like: can this agent read the CRM but not write it?

Can it send email, or only draft? Can it touch financial records? This is per-agent access control, distinct from Tool Safety, which covers runtime risk checks like confirming destructive actions before they run.

For RevOps, permissioning is the first scoping decision before any deployment, because it bounds the blast radius of every mistake an agent can make.

A practical example

Label: example.

Before launch, a RevOps team grants the SDR-assist agent read access to the CRM and draft-only rights on email, while the reporting agent gets read access to analytics but no write tools at all.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether permissions can be set per agent, per tool, and per action level (read, create, update, delete), not just on or off.
  • Test that a permission change takes effect immediately for running agents, not only new sessions.
  • Check whether permissioning integrates with your existing identity and role systems or requires a parallel setup.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Overly broad permissions speed up pilots but create real exposure; overly narrow ones starve agents of context and force constant human handoffs.
