Continuous Deployment (CD)

Continuous Deployment (CD) is the practice of releasing every change that passes automated checks directly to production, without a manual approval step. Paired with CI, it shortens the path from edit to live.

In automation contexts, it means a validated workflow change goes live automatically, with rollback mechanisms and health signals in place to catch problems fast.

A practical example

Example: a team updates a cart-abandonment sequence's timing rules. After CI checks pass, CD publishes the change to production the same hour, and automated health signals would flag anomalies for review.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether deployments are atomic, so a failed publish leaves the previous version running untouched.
  • Check what automatic rollback or circuit-breaker behavior exists when a deployed change misbehaves.
  • Confirm every deployment is logged with the change contents and the checks that passed.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: CD removes the human review gate, so it depends heavily on the quality of your automated checks; weak tests mean weak safety.
