Execution Trace

An execution trace is the per-record, per-step record of what an automation evaluated and did: which conditions were checked, what data was used, and which path was taken.

It differs from raw logging, which is unstructured output, and from observability, which monitors system health. The trace is replayable for one contact's journey through a workflow.

A practical example

Example: a contact was enrolled, skipped a branch and received the wrong email three days ago.

A trace shows that at step four, a condition evaluated against a field that had been blank at that moment, explaining the skipped branch.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether traces are retained per contact and for how long.
  • Test whether a trace shows the actual field values used, not just step names.
  • Check whether support and admins can retrieve traces without engineering help.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Detailed traces consume storage and may be sampled or truncated on high-volume workflows, so recent history can be incomplete.
