Kafka Architecture

Kafka architecture is the concrete design of an event stream backbone: which topics carry marketing events, how many partitions each topic has, how long messages are retained, and how consumer groups track offsets.

Partitioning by contact ID keeps a person's events ordered; retention windows decide how long a replay is possible.

A practical example

Example: a CDP streams web and email events into a topic partitioned by contact ID with seven-day retention.

A downstream attribution job falls behind, and analysts discover it can only replay the last seven days of events.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how events are partitioned and whether contact-level ordering is guaranteed.
  • Confirm retention windows per topic and whether replay beyond that window is possible.
  • Ask how consumer group lag is monitored and who is alerted when offsets fall behind.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Kafka adds real operational burden — brokers, monitoring, and offset management — that small teams often underestimate when a vendor 'just needs Kafka'.
