Secret Management

Secret management is the handling of credentials such as API keys, tokens, and passwords that workflows use to connect to external systems.

In an automation platform, secrets are stored once and reused across many workflows, so weak storage, broad visibility, or missing rotation controls turn one leak into organization-wide exposure.

A practical example

Example: a marketing automation workflow uses a stored CRM token; if any workflow editor can view that token in plain text, a single compromised account exposes your CRM to outsiders.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether secrets are encrypted at rest and never displayed in plain text after entry
  • Test role-based access: can editors run workflows without being able to read the credentials they use
  • Confirm support for rotation and external vaults such as AWS Secrets Manager or HashiCorp Vault

Limitations and tradeoffs

Centralized secret storage simplifies operations but concentrates risk; a platform breach or misconfigured permission exposes every connected system at once.
