Data Stewardship

Data stewardship is the operational practice of assigning named people to maintain specific data domains: documenting definitions, monitoring quality, approving access, and resolving discrepancies.

Stewards execute governance decisions day to day; they are distinct from governance councils that set policy and from engineers who build pipelines.

A practical example

Example: a marketing operations lead acts as steward for the customer domain, so when 'active customer' is redefined, she updates the metric documentation, notifies dashboard owners, and validates the change in staging.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the platform supports data ownership metadata, such as domain owners on tables and dashboards
  • Verify stewards can document definitions and quality rules where analysts actually work
  • Ask how ownership transfers when a steward leaves the team

Limitations and tradeoffs

Stewardship requires allocated time and authority; naming stewards without workload adjustment tends to produce stale documentation rather than governed data.
