Distributed Systems

Distributed systems is the discipline of multiple independent machines communicating over a network to act as one system. Every martech stack is distributed: CRM, automation platform and warehouse are separate computers exchanging messages.

This explains familiar frustrations: syncs that fail halfway, two updates arriving out of order, and data that is only eventually consistent rather than instantly identical everywhere.

A practical example

Example: a lead submits a form and clicks an email within the same second.

The routing job reads the CRM before the form sync lands, scores the lead on stale data, and routes it to the wrong rep.

No component is broken; the systems simply saw different moments in time.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors what consistency guarantees their syncs offer and how conflicts between systems are resolved.
  • Check whether connectors retry failed messages and whether ordering is preserved on retry.
  • Look for monitoring that surfaces sync lag and dropped events, not just job success flags.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: coordinating changes across machines introduces latency and failure handling. Consistency choices depend on the operation and system design; ask what happens during a network partition instead of assuming every connector offers the same guarantees.
