Fault Tolerance

Fault tolerance is the ability of a system to keep operating when a component fails.

In marketing infrastructure, it means a dropped connection to your CRM or a crashed webhook endpoint does not silently lose leads.

Designs use retries, queues, and failover paths so events are held and redelivered rather than discarded.

A practical example

Label: example. Your form-to-CRM connector goes down for twenty minutes during a webinar. A fault-tolerant pipeline queues the incoming leads and delivers them once the connection recovers, so sales still sees every registrant.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the vendor handles delivery failures: is there a durable queue with retry intervals, or do events drop after one attempt?
  • Test a deliberate outage in a sandbox: disconnect the destination and confirm leads are retained and replayed in order.
  • Review whether the vendor exposes failure alerts and dead-letter visibility so your team learns about drops, not sales.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Fault tolerance covers component failures during operation; it does not replace backups or disaster recovery for full-site loss, and redundant designs add cost and complexity.
