Materialized View

A materialized view is a database object that stores the result of a query physically, so reads hit precomputed data instead of rerunning the query.

Unlike a standard view, which is just a saved definition, a materialized view must be refreshed when source tables change, either on a schedule, on demand, or automatically.

A practical example

Example: a daily active users metric that scans a year of events is stored as a materialized view refreshed nightly, so dashboards read a small precomputed table instead of scanning raw events.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform supports automatic or incremental refresh, or only full recomputation
  • Check how refresh failures are surfaced and whether stale views are flagged to dashboard users
  • Estimate storage and compute costs of keeping several materialized views current

Limitations and tradeoffs

Materialized views trade freshness and storage for speed; stale results can mislead reports if refresh schedules do not match how the data is used.
