Operational Data Store (ODS)

An Operational Data Store (ODS) is a current-state copy of operational records, kept fresher than the warehouse but not modeled for analytics.

It mirrors what each lead, contact, or deal looks like right now, so routing rules and alerts can act between warehouse loads. It is a staging layer for operations, not a reporting source of truth.

A practical example

Example: a lead fills out a form and the CRM record lands in the ODS within a minute.

A routing rule checks the ODS, sees the new territory field, and assigns the owner before the nightly warehouse model ever runs.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how quickly a source change appears in the ODS, and whether the latency is documented per connector.
  • Confirm the ODS keeps current state only, or clarify how you would query historical versions if needed.
  • Check whether alerting and routing tools can query the ODS directly, and what query load it tolerates.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Because an ODS holds current state rather than history, it cannot answer trend questions; you still need the modeled warehouse for analysis.
