A practical example
Example: a Monday pipeline report aggregates every deal and activity from the quarter. Running it on the replica leaves the production database untouched, so reps keep working while the report churns through thousands of rows.
What to evaluate before investing
- Ask whether the database or CRM vendor offers native replicas, and what lag between primary and replica is typical.
- Confirm your reporting tool can point at the replica connection separately from the production connection.
- Check whether complex analytical queries perform acceptably on the replica, since it shares the source engine's row-based design.
Limitations and tradeoffs
A replica still uses the source system's engine and data model, so it relieves load but does not turn an OLTP database into an analytical warehouse.
