Product Data Governance

Product data governance is the ongoing practice of assigning who may create, edit, and approve product information, and through what workflow.

It differs from transmitting product feeds: a feed moves data out, while governance decides what the data should say and who is accountable when it is wrong.

A practical example

Label: example.

A kitchenware brand with three suppliers assigns its merchandiser as data owner, requires suppliers to submit specs through a template, and routes any change to weight or safety claims through a second approver before publishing.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform supports role-based edit permissions and approval workflows per attribute or category.
  • Confirm there is an audit trail showing who changed what and when for product records.
  • Check whether supplier-submitted data lands in a review queue rather than publishing directly.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Governance adds process friction; overly strict approval chains can slow launches, so scope mandatory reviews to attributes that carry real risk.
