Promotion Engine

A promotion engine is the rules system that decides when offers apply at checkout or in the cart: percentage discounts, bundles, free shipping, or coupon codes.

Its defining question is combination: can a sale price stack with a coupon and a loyalty benefit, in which order do rules evaluate, and what happens when two offers conflict.

This differs from campaign creative, which decides what the offer says; the engine decides whether and how it applies.

A practical example

Example: a sports retailer runs a seasonal sale alongside a coupon code.

The engine must decide whether the coupon applies to already-discounted items, whether free shipping survives when the discount drops the cart below the threshold, and which discount the customer sees first.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how stacking rules are configured: can you mark promotions as exclusive, stackable, or combinable in a defined order, without custom code?
  • Check whether the engine evaluates rules in a predictable, testable order, and whether you can preview the applied price for a sample cart before launch.
  • Verify coupon controls: usage limits per customer, expiry handling, and whether codes can be restricted to products, tiers, or channels.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Flexible stacking rules are powerful but error-prone; a single misconfigured combination can apply unintended discounts across the whole catalog.
