Returns Policy

A returns policy is the written set of rules that decides which items can come back, within what window, in what condition, and with which refund method.

It is a business decision, not a software feature. Automation tools then enforce those rules at checkout, in the customer account, and in the warehouse.

A practical example

Example: a retailer allows returns within 30 days for unworn apparel but excludes final-sale items and requires original tags. Its returns portal reads these rules and approves or rejects each request automatically.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the vendor encode per-category rules, such as different windows for apparel versus electronics, without custom code?
  • Does the portal show policy outcomes to customers before they submit a return, reducing support tickets?
  • Can merchandising edit eligibility rules seasonally without a developer or a release cycle?

Limitations and tradeoffs

A strict policy reduces return volume but can suppress conversion and repeat purchases; the tradeoff between flexibility and abuse control should be tested, not assumed.
