Shipping Promise Accuracy

Shipping promise accuracy is the practice of measuring the delivery dates you promised at checkout against the dates carriers actually achieved, by carrier, service level and region.

It is a measurement discipline, separate from the act of making the promise. Without it, teams keep displaying optimistic dates and learn about failures only from complaints.

A practical example

Example: an apparel brand reviews 90 days of orders and finds that one regional carrier misses its two-day promise on 18 percent of shipments, while another hits it consistently, prompting a routing review.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the vendor capture the exact promise shown at checkout, not just the carrier's estimated date?
  • Does reporting slice accuracy by carrier, ZIP code, service level and season so patterns are actionable?
  • Can accuracy data feed back into the promise engine so displayed dates adjust over time?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Accuracy measurement reveals problems but does not fix them; improving the number requires changing carriers, cutoffs or the promise itself, each with cost implications.
