SKU Management

SKU management is the practice of keeping sellable item identifiers stable and unambiguous through their whole lifecycle: creation, variants, bundles, discontinuation and reactivation.

A SKU (stock keeping unit) is the code a specific sellable item carries, distinct from a category taxonomy, which organizes items for browsing.

Problems arise when the same item gets different codes in the commerce platform, warehouse and marketplaces, or when discontinued SKUs are silently reused.

A practical example

Example: a footwear brand assigns one SKU per size and color of a running shoe, retires the code when the colorway ends, and never reuses it, so historical sales and returns stay traceable.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the vendor enforce uniqueness and format rules for SKUs across systems, including marketplaces with their own ID limits?
  • How are bundles and variants handled, so a kit has its own identity while components keep theirs?
  • Does deactivation preserve historical data and block accidental reuse of retired codes?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Strict SKU discipline slows new-product launches and requires governance across teams; the payoff is reliable inventory and reporting, but the process itself is ongoing work.
