Subscription Billing

Subscription billing manages the full billing lifecycle of a subscription: renewals, plan changes, upgrades and downgrades, pauses, cancellations, and proration when a change happens mid-cycle.

Repeating a fixed charge is only the baseline; the lifecycle work is applying every change to the invoice correctly.

A practical example

Example: a customer upgrades from a basic to a premium plan halfway through the month. The billing system calculates proration for the remaining days, issues an adjusted invoice, and resets the renewal date.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the tool calculates proration for mid-cycle upgrades, downgrades, and cancellations, and whether you can preview the math.
  • Check how renewals handle price changes, including grandfathering existing customers at old prices.
  • Confirm that trials, coupons, and one-time add-ons combine on a single invoice without manual fixes.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Proration and renewal logic is where billing systems differ most; a configuration that looks simple in a demo can produce unexpected invoice amounts on real plan changes.
