API Error Response

An API error response is the structured message an API returns when a request fails: a status code, an error code or type, and often a human-readable detail explaining the cause.

Reading it correctly determines the next action, because a 429 rate-limit rejection calls for waiting, a 400 validation error calls for fixing the payload, and a 401 calls for refreshing credentials.

It covers the failure message content itself, distinct from Retry Logic, which is the action taken in response.

A practical example

Example: a lead push fails with status 422 and error code INVALID_FIELD, detailing that the phone number contains letters.

Your integration routes it to a data-quality queue instead of retrying, since retrying an invalid payload would fail forever. A separate 503 from the same CRM triggers the retry path instead.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors for their error code catalog and whether codes are stable across releases.
  • Check whether responses distinguish retryable failures from permanent ones in a machine-readable way.
  • Verify how your connector logs error bodies, so failed pushes can be diagnosed without reproducing them.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Error formats vary widely between vendors, and some return generic 500 codes that hide the real cause; parsing rules must be maintained per integration.
