Credential Rotation

Credential rotation is the operational practice of periodically replacing the passwords, keys, and tokens that integrations use, so a long-lived secret never becomes a permanent attack surface.

For buyers, the key question is not whether to rotate but how much manual work each rotation requires: whether connected systems pick up new credentials automatically, how long the switchover window lasts, and whether rotations can be scheduled or must be triggered ad hoc.

A practical example

Example: your security policy requires rotating CRM API credentials every 90 days. If the automation platform supports dual-credential overlap, you can issue the new secret, update the integration, and retire the old one without downtime.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform supports overlapping old and new credentials during a rotation window.
  • Confirm whether rotations can be scheduled and who receives notifications when one is due.
  • Check whether updating a credential requires re-authenticating every dependent workflow individually.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Rotation overhead scales with the number of integrations; platforms without automated credential updates turn a routine security task into recurring manual maintenance across every connection.
