Data Contracts

Data contracts are formal agreements between the team that produces data and the teams that consume it, specifying the schema, quality rules, semantics, and service expectations such as freshness.

Increasingly, contracts are machine-readable and enforced by tooling, so violations are caught automatically rather than discovered in meetings.

A practical example

Example: the data team and marketing agree that the "active_customer" flag updates within one hour of billing changes, uses true or false only, and never goes null; a monitoring tool alerts when any clause is violated.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether contracts are enforced by the platform or only documented manually.
  • Check if contracts cover semantics and freshness, not just field names and types.
  • Confirm there is a change process so consumers are consulted before breaking updates.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: contracts add coordination work up front and can slow ad hoc data requests, which some fast-moving teams initially resist.
