Eventual Consistency

Eventual consistency means a distributed system guarantees that, after a change, all connected copies will match — but not immediately. There is a window, often seconds to minutes, during which systems disagree.

This is a deliberate design tradeoff in most cloud platforms, prioritizing availability and throughput over instant synchronization.

A practical example

Example: a contact updates their email in the CRM. The marketing platform still shows the old address for a few minutes, so a scheduled campaign segment built in that window may use stale data.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors to state typical propagation delay between their platform and your CRM, in concrete numbers.
  • Test whether time-sensitive automations (triggered emails, lead routing) read fresh or cached data at execution time.
  • Check whether the vendor exposes sync timestamps or version indicators so your team can detect stale records.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Eventual consistency is usually acceptable for marketing data, but it is a poor fit for workflows where a few minutes of staleness causes real harm, such as compliance-driven suppression lists.
