Acquisition Funnel

An acquisition funnel is the end-to-end model of how new customers are won: discovery, first visit, signup or lead capture, activation and paying customer.

It is broader than a conversion funnel, which tracks steps toward one action, and it emphasizes the front half of the journey — where channels, campaigns and acquisition costs matter most.

Growth teams often pair it with metrics like CAC and activation rate.

A practical example

Example: a SaaS team maps its acquisition funnel from paid search click to activated trial. It sees most drop-off at activation, not signup, so it reallocates budget from more traffic to better onboarding emails.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool can connect acquisition channels to downstream activation and revenue, not just to signups
  • Verify it supports multi-channel journeys, since buyers rarely arrive through a single source
  • Ask whether acquisition cost per stage can be calculated, so you can see where spend stops producing progress

Limitations and tradeoffs

Acquisition funnels can overvalue volume: a channel that fills the top cheaply but never activates users may look better than it performs.
