Channel Mix

Channel mix is the planned distribution of marketing effort and budget across channels such as email, paid search, paid social, organic content, events, and partner programs.

A deliberate mix matters because channels serve different funnel roles: some generate demand, others capture existing intent, and others nurture existing contacts.

A practical example

Example: a B2B team allocates its quarter across paid search for high-intent queries, LinkedIn campaigns for audience building, a monthly webinar for mid-funnel education, and lifecycle email for existing contacts, reviewing the allocation after each campaign cycle.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the platform reports performance per channel in one place or requires manual consolidation from ad and email tools.
  • Ask how the tool handles channels it cannot measure directly, such as events or offline interactions.
  • Evaluate whether budget planning and actuals can be compared side by side within the platform.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Channel-level results are shaped by attribution choices, so a channel that looks weak under last-click may look strong under multi-touch models; treat mix decisions as hypotheses to revisit, not settled conclusions.
