CTA Topic Brief

A CTA topic brief is the short creation document required before any new call-to-action copy is written.

It forces four decisions up front: target audience, the offer being promoted, the claim the CTA may make, and the destination.

It differs from standing value proposition maps, which govern approved claim language across campaigns; the brief applies those standards to one specific CTA and records the choices made for it, giving copywriters and reviewers a shared pre-launch reference.

A practical example

Example: before writing a CTA for a migration guide, the brief names operations managers as the audience, the guide as the offer, a single approved claim about reducing manual handoffs, and the gated download page as the destination.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the brief is a required artifact in your launch checklist, not an optional template.
  • Check that the claim in each brief traces back to an approved source, such as the value proposition map or a documented product fact.
  • Verify the destination and offer in the brief match the live CTA after build, since briefs and builds often diverge.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Briefs add a step to every CTA, which can slow rapid campaign work; keep them to one page or teams will bypass them under deadline pressure.
