Customer Journey

The customer journey is the complete sequence of experiences a person has with your company across the full relationship: discovering the brand, evaluating, purchasing, onboarding, using the product, getting support, and renewing or expanding.

Unlike a funnel, which ends at conversion and is viewed from the company's perspective, the journey continues after the sale and is described from the customer's perspective, including moments of frustration and effort.

In automation terms, journey thinking pushes teams to connect marketing, sales, product, and support data into one timeline per customer, so messages reflect what the customer has actually experienced rather than only what campaigns they received.

A practical example

Example: a customer who opened three support tickets in their first month is excluded from an upsell campaign and instead receives an onboarding check-in, because their journey stage is adoption, not expansion.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the platform combine marketing, sales, and support events into a single per-customer timeline?
  • Does it support lifecycle stages beyond the sale, such as onboarding, adoption, and renewal?
  • Can campaign logic reference product usage or support history, not just email engagement?

Limitations and tradeoffs

A full journey view requires data from many systems; if integrations are incomplete, the 'journey' is really just the marketing slice, and decisions made on it can misread the customer's situation.
