Last-Touch Attribution

Last-touch attribution assigns 100% of conversion credit to the final recorded touchpoint before conversion. It is the default in many analytics tools because it is simple and matches how ad platforms report.

Its bias is structural: it systematically favors bottom-of-funnel channels like branded search and retargeting, which harvest demand created elsewhere.

A practical example

Example: a lead nurtured for months by content marketing finally converts after clicking a retargeting ad; last-touch gives the retargeting campaign all the credit and the content program none.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform lets you set the attribution window and excludes direct traffic as the final touch when appropriate.
  • Verify last-touch reports can be compared against first-touch or multi-touch views in the same report.
  • Check how the tool treats conversions with no prior tracked touch, so unattributed conversions are visible.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Because it rewards the last click, last-touch can justify cutting the programs that create demand, and ad platforms using it tend to overstate their own contribution to conversions.
