Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL)

A Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL) is a contact whose behavior or profile suggests meaningful buying potential, according to criteria your marketing and sales teams agree on in advance.

MQL is a definition, not a software feature: the platform can only flag or route MQLs once you have encoded those criteria as scoring rules, form responses, or lifecycle stages.

A practical example

Example: a company defines an MQL as a decision-maker title from a target industry who has attended a webinar and viewed pricing; the platform tags matching contacts and adds them to a sales follow-up queue.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Verify the platform supports your qualification logic, including firmographic filters, behavioral thresholds, and negative criteria that disqualify contacts.
  • Check whether MQL status can be synced bidirectionally with your CRM so sales acceptance or rejection updates marketing reporting.
  • Ask how the tool reports MQL-to-next-stage conversion over time, so you can see whether the definition is working.

Limitations and tradeoffs

MQL definitions can drift as your market and sales process change. Revisit the criteria when acceptance rates or lead quality change; no single review cadence fits every team.
