Personalization

Personalization is the practice of adapting marketing messages, content or offers to individual characteristics or behavior. It spans levels: simple merge tokens (name, company), segment-level variation, and real-time adaptation based on recent actions.

The level you choose determines the data infrastructure you need.

A practical example

Example: a B2B team starts with first-name tokens in email, then adds segment-based case studies by industry, and finally adapts website banners to pages a visitor viewed in earlier sessions.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Map which data fields and events each personalization level requires, and confirm the platform can ingest and keep them current.
  • Ask how personalization rules are built: visual editors, formula languages, or code, and who on your team can maintain them.
  • Verify whether personalization works across channels (email, web, ads) from one rule set or must be rebuilt per channel.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Personalization quality is capped by data quality: stale or sparse records produce awkward or wrong messages, so governance and hygiene work is a permanent cost, not a one-time setup task.
