Sales Funnel

A sales funnel is the staged model of a buyer's path from first contact to a closed deal, typically moving through awareness, interest, evaluation and purchase, and mirrored in pipeline stages like lead, MQL, SQL, opportunity and customer.

It is owned jointly by sales and marketing, and its value depends on both teams agreeing on what each stage means and when a lead moves.

A practical example

Example: a company defines an SQL as a lead with confirmed budget, authority and timeline.

Once the definition is shared, marketing stops passing unqualified leads and sales stops complaining about volume, because the handoff rule is explicit.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether stage definitions can be customized and enforced automatically, not left to manual judgment alone
  • Verify the tool reports stage-to-stage conversion, stage duration and stalled-deal counts for each stage
  • Ask whether marketing and sales share one funnel view in the platform, or whether data must be reconciled across systems

Limitations and tradeoffs

Funnel stages are internal labels, not buyer behavior; if definitions drift between CRM and marketing tools, conversion reporting becomes unreliable.
