Search Demand

Search demand is the quantity and pattern of queries users make on a topic, typically expressed as monthly search volume, trend direction, and seasonality.

It exists independently of your site: demand describes the market, while rankings describe your position in it.

Volume figures are modeled estimates from tools or platforms, not exact counts, and they vary meaningfully between providers because each uses different data sources and smoothing methods.

A practical example

Example: a team comparing two topic ideas finds one keyword with high stated volume but steep seasonal drops, and another with lower volume that is stable year-round, changing which content gets prioritized.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which data source underpins volume estimates and whether they are modeled or observed
  • Confirm whether the tool shows trend history and seasonality, not just a single monthly average
  • Check whether volumes can be segmented by country and language to match your markets

Limitations and tradeoffs

High search demand does not imply commercial value; informational queries with large volume may attract readers who never become buyers, so demand must be read alongside intent.
