Search Visibility

Search visibility is an aggregate measure of how much presence a domain has across a set of tracked queries, usually combining rankings with estimated click-through rates or impression weights.

Unlike a single ranking, it summarizes portfolio-level strength and can be compared over time or against competitors.

Because each vendor weights positions differently, visibility scores are not comparable across tools; they are directional indicators within one platform.

A practical example

Example: a SaaS vendor tracks 500 keywords and its visibility score rises after new content ranks in positions four to eight across 60 of them, even though no single keyword reached first place.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask the vendor to document the exact visibility formula, including position weights and CTR assumptions
  • Confirm you can export the underlying keyword set so the score can be audited or rebuilt
  • Check whether competitor visibility uses the same keyword set as yours, or a different one

Limitations and tradeoffs

Visibility scores depend entirely on the tracked keyword list; adding or removing queries changes the score without any real change in performance.
