Glossary / Evaluation and implementation guide

Technical SEO

Technical SEO is the subdiscipline focused on making a site easy for search engines to crawl, render, and index: clean site architecture, working internal links, fast page loading, correct canonical tags, XML sitemaps, robots directives, and structured data markup.

Content and links cannot compensate for a site that search engines cannot efficiently access, so technical health is usually addressed before content expansion.

A practical example

Example: an audit reveals that a marketing site's faceted navigation generates thousands of duplicate URLs; the team adds canonical tags and parameter handling so crawl budget concentrates on indexable pages.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the tool crawls with JavaScript rendering, since many modern sites serve content client-side that basic crawlers miss.
  • Verify it detects canonical conflicts, redirect chains, and orphan pages, not just broken links.
  • Check whether Core Web Vitals data is integrated or must be pulled separately from page speed tooling.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Removing a crawl or indexing blocker can make an important page eligible to appear in search.

It does not guarantee indexing or rankings; verify Google has recrawled the page and reassess whether its content meets the searcher’s need.
