Customer Expansion Readiness

Customer Expansion Readiness is the forward-looking determination of which installed-base accounts show the combined usage, health, and behavioral pattern that justifies an expansion conversation now.

It differs from whitespace mapping, which plans where expansion could occur, and from health scoring, which flags retention risk.

Readiness blends signals such as rising seat utilization, adoption of adjacent features, renewal proximity, and absence of open escalations into a timing judgment that can trigger plays automatically.

A practical example

Label: example. An account crosses 85 percent seat utilization, adds two new active teams, and sits 90 days from renewal with no open tickets.

The readiness rule fires an expansion play to the customer success owner, who requests an upsell meeting.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm readiness rules can combine usage data, health inputs, and contract dates in one evaluation.
  • Check whether plays can be suppressed when risk signals contradict readiness, such as an open escalation.
  • Ask how readiness thresholds are tuned per product line rather than applied globally.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Readiness models can push outreach before value is proven, damaging trust; require a human confirmation step for high-value accounts and revisit thresholds as usage patterns mature.
