Deal Desk

A deal desk is a cross-functional function — usually sales operations, finance and legal — that reviews and supports non-standard deals: custom pricing, unusual contract terms, discounts beyond policy or complex bundles.

It is a process and a team, not a software category, though deal desks rely on CPQ (configure, price, quote) tools, approval workflows and CRM deal records to operate efficiently.

A practical example

Example: a rep requests a 30% discount with a two-year ramp for a strategic prospect; the deal desk reviews margin impact, legal terms and precedent, then approves a counter-offer within its SLA.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how approval chains are configured — whether thresholds, roles and escalation paths can match your actual approval policy.
  • Verify that deal desk cases link to the CRM opportunity so reviewers see full context without leaving their workflow.
  • Check whether the tool tracks approval turnaround times so you can measure and improve the process.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A deal desk can become a bottleneck if its scope is undefined; without clear thresholds for what requires review, every deal routes through it and sales cycles stretch.
