Pipeline Inspection

Pipeline inspection is a recurring, structured review of open opportunities to verify deal quality, stage integrity, and forecast accuracy.

Unlike a casual pipeline meeting, inspection applies consistent criteria—next steps, close dates, engagement evidence, qualification completeness—and treats gaps as coaching and data problems rather than blame exercises.

A practical example

Example: each Monday a sales manager inspects every deal above a value threshold against a checklist: a dated next step, a confirmed economic buyer, and activity in the last fourteen days.

Deals failing the checklist are flagged for coaching or removed from the commit forecast.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool can score or flag deals against inspection criteria automatically before the meeting.
  • Confirm inspection results are tracked over time per rep, so trends inform coaching rather than one-off conversations.
  • Ask if the commit and best-case forecast views can exclude deals that fail inspection criteria.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Inspection consumes significant manager time and can devolve into theater if criteria are gamed—reps writing plausible next steps without doing the work—so criteria must tie to verifiable activity, not self-reported fields alone.
