Agent Handoff

An agent handoff is the transfer of an in-progress task from one AI agent to another, or from an agent to a human, including the full working context: conversation history, data gathered, decisions made, and remaining steps.

A poor handoff forces the receiver to start over or act on incomplete information.

A practical example

Example: a lead-qualification agent collects budget and timeline, then hands the qualified lead to a scheduling agent with a structured summary instead of a raw transcript.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Inspect what payload a handoff actually carries: ask for a sample of the context object passed between agents.
  • Check whether handoffs to humans create assignable tasks in tools your team already uses, such as a CRM or help desk.
  • Test a failure case: what happens to the task if the receiving agent or person never picks it up?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Handoffs between agents from different vendors often lose context, since each platform may use its own internal state format.
