Agent Planning

Agent planning is the phase where an agent forms a sequence of steps before executing anything.

Given a goal, the agent reasons about what must happen first, what depends on what, and where it needs more information, producing a plan it then follows or revises.

This is distinct from an Agent Workflow, which is the defined pipeline itself; planning is the agent's act of composing or adapting that sequence.

For GTM teams the distinction decides whether an agent can handle novel requests or only runs prebuilt scripts.

A practical example

Label: example. Asked to re-engage stalled opportunities, a planning agent first drafts steps: identify stalled deals, check last touchpoints, pick a channel per segment, then draft messages for review.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask the vendor to show the generated plan for a live task, not just the final output, so you can inspect step logic.
  • Test a goal the agent has never seen and see whether it plans sensibly or fails outside scripted paths.
  • Check whether plans can require human approval before execution and how revisions to a plan are handled.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Plans generated on the fly can be plausible but wrong; without review gates, a bad plan executes confidently at scale.
