Agent Routing

Agent routing is the mechanism that decides which agent or workflow handles an incoming request.

Routing rules can rely on request content, source, priority, account data, or explicit instructions, and they determine the first stop for every task entering your agent system.

A practical example

Example: an inbound request mentioning pricing is routed to a qualification agent, while a request referencing an existing opportunity goes to an account-research agent, based on rules the team defines.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can routing rules be configured and tested by your team, or do they require vendor involvement for every change?
  • Does the platform expose why a request was routed a particular way, so misroutes can be diagnosed?
  • Are fallback paths defined for requests that match no rule, so tasks are not silently dropped?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: rigid rule-based routing is predictable but brittle as request variety grows; overly flexible model-driven routing is harder to audit. Most teams need a deliberate mix of both.
