Executor Agent

An executor agent is the agent that carries out the concrete steps a plan defines: calling the API, writing the draft, updating the record, sending the message.

It receives a defined task, picks the right tools, performs the actions, and reports results back.

This is the doing role that complements a Planner Agent's decomposition role; the planner decides what to do, the executor does it.

In build-versus-buy decisions, executor quality is where most real-world variance lives, because execution touches your live systems, data, and customers directly.

A practical example

Label: example. After a planner lists 'draft renewal email for at-risk accounts', an executor agent pulls account history from the CRM, writes the draft in your tone guide, and files it for approval.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Test the executor against your actual systems in a sandbox, including edge cases like missing fields or duplicate records.
  • Ask what the executor does when a tool call fails mid-step: retry, skip, or halt and report?
  • Check whether every action the executor takes is logged with before-and-after values for audit.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Executors act on live systems; an executor with weak error handling can create duplicate sends or corrupt records faster than a human can notice.
