Human Approval Gate

A human approval gate is a hard, blocking checkpoint in a workflow: the automation pauses and cannot proceed until a designated person explicitly approves the pending action.

Unlike general human-in-the-loop review, a gate is a defined control point, usually tied to high-risk or high-value actions such as sending campaigns or changing records.

A practical example

Example: a lifecycle workflow prepares a win-back email to 5,000 lapsed customers; the send is held at an approval gate until a marketing manager reviews the segment and copy.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm gates are truly blocking: the action must not execute on timeout or by default without explicit approval.
  • Check whether gates support delegation, escalation after no response, and approval from mobile or chat tools.
  • Ask if gate rules can reference data conditions, such as audience size or monetary value, not just fixed workflow steps.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Gates create a single point of delay; if the approver is unavailable, time-sensitive campaigns and workflows stall until someone intervenes.
