Human-in-the-Loop

Human-in-the-loop (HITL) is a design pattern where a person reviews, corrects, or approves specific steps inside an automated workflow instead of the AI acting fully autonomously.

The human touchpoint can sit before an action (pre-approval), after it (post-review), or only when the system is uncertain.

A practical example

Example: an agent auto-answers routine support tickets, but any reply touching billing terms is routed to a support lead for approval before it reaches the customer.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Map which of your workflows genuinely need a human step, and confirm the vendor supports pre- and post-action review, not just one.
  • Check whether reviewers can edit the AI output or only approve or reject it; editability changes training value.
  • Ask how the human step is tracked: completion times, rejection reasons, and who reviewed what.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Every human touchpoint adds delay and cost; too many checkpoints make the automation slower than the manual process it replaced.
