A planner agent is a specialized agent whose job is to break a goal into subtasks that other agents execute.

It does not do the work itself; it produces the task list, orders dependencies, and often assigns each subtask to an appropriate executor.

This role is distinct from a Supervisor Agent, which oversees and quality-checks agents during execution, while the planner operates up front.

The planner/executor split is a maturity signal in agent platforms: platforms without it tend to hard-code sequences, which limits how far agents can go on unfamiliar goals.

Label: example. Given a quarterly webinar goal, a planner agent outputs subtasks: build the attendee list, draft the invitation sequence, prepare the follow-up email, and hand each to a matching executor agent.

What to evaluate before investing

Ask whether the planner adapts subtasks when inputs change mid-job or produces one static list per goal.
Check if planner output is visible and editable by humans before executors start.
Test how the planner handles a goal with missing information: does it ask, assume, or fail?
