Prompt Chaining

Prompt chaining is the practice of sequencing several model calls so the output of one becomes the input of the next.

A chain might extract key points from a document, then draft a message from those points, then score the draft against a rubric. Each link is a separate call with its own instructions.

A practical example

Example: an agent processing an inbound demo request first summarizes the prospect's website, then drafts a personalized opener from that summary, then checks the draft for banned claims before sending.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors to show the actual chain structure: how many calls, what passes between them, and where a human can intervene.
  • Check whether a failure in one link halts the chain or triggers a defined fallback path.
  • Confirm you can edit or disable individual links without rebuilding the whole pipeline.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Longer chains multiply latency, cost, and failure points, so more steps is not automatically better.
