API Governance

API governance is the set of policies, standards, and processes that determine how APIs are designed, documented, approved, secured, and retired across an organization.

It covers naming and versioning conventions, security baselines, review workflows, and ownership. Governance matters once multiple teams create integrations and inconsistency starts creating security and maintenance risk.

A practical example

Example: after three teams each build their own contact-sync integration with different authentication styles, a platform lead introduces a governance standard: one shared API style guide, a review checklist, and a registry listing every live integration with its owner.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform supports a central registry of integrations with owners, scopes, and last-reviewed dates.
  • Check for policy enforcement options, such as blocking endpoints that lack authentication or required documentation.
  • Confirm deprecation workflows exist so retired APIs are communicated to consumers before they break.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Heavy governance slows teams down; if reviews take weeks, developers route around the process. Standards need lightweight enforcement to actually stick.
